Keep a close eye on the Ngorongoro Crater’s edge. For millennia, Tanzania’s prehistoric Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site regarded as the World’s Eighth Wonder, has gaping heavenward. Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is barely visible to the naked eye, nestled high above the plains within the Crater’s craggy rim, shrouded in river stone and indigenous vines.

Its torch-lit walls are ornamented with stylized cave art and are framed by arched stone corridors and timbered decks. A blazing fire burns in the lodge’s stone heart, which is maintained alight at all times. Rooms are coiled around the rim of the Crater.
