6 Days Machame Route Hiking

Machame route is considered one of the most popular routes and most beautiful routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. The Machame route is located closer to Mount Kilimanjaro from the south, commencing with a short drive from Moshi to Machame Gate or from Arusha to the Machame gate. The route leads climbers through the Montana forest to Shira Plateau and also offers views of Mount Meru, Shira Ridge. The 6 days of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is highly recommended and used by many climbers, it offers you enough time for acclimatization.

Machame route 6 days Kilimanjaro Climbing plus 2 overnights in Moshi or Arusha.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – drive to Moshi or Arusha.

Upon arrival, you will be met timeously at Kilimanjaro Airport by our transfer specialist who will welcome you and then transfer you to your arranged hotel in Moshi or hotel in Arusha. That evening your mountain guide will meet you for a briefing on the hike and check your trekking gears and ensure that you have all the necessary equipment that you required for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 2: Climbing from Machame Gate 1,790 meters to Machame Camp 2,850 meters.

  • Distance: 10 kilometers
  • Hiking Time: Approximately 5-6 hours

Upon finishing your breakfast, you will be picked up at your hotel and heading to the Machame entrance Gate of Mount Kilimanjaro about an hour’s drive. At the gate, your guide will be doing the registration and weighing for the porter’s luggage. while waiting you will be given a lunch box and providing adequate water before starting the hike. Once this is all done, you will start your hiking adventure within the wonderful Montana forest with beautiful trees, ancient fern trees, lichen, beautiful flowers, endemic flowers. The Machame camp is located above the trees at 2850 meters above sea level.

Day 3: Climbing from Machame Camp 2,850 meters to Shira Camp 3,845 meters.

After early morning breakfast, you will start your second-day trekking, the path steepens and the landscape changes into moor- and heathland and the open landscape allows you to see the exciting mountain range. The second day’s destination is shorter than the previous day and you will arrive at the Shira Camp by mid-afternoon. The camp has an incredible view of the mountain and incredible sunset, the sun lights the rock face and glacier of Kibo.

Day 4: Climbing from Shira Camp 3,845 meters to Lava Tower 4,640 meters to Barranco Camp 3,940 meters.

After having a delicious breakfast, you will start the hike to Lava tower 4640 meters above sea level where you will stop for lunch and after lunch, you will descend to Barranco Camp 4940 meters. This will let your body to acclimatize very well since you have relative altitude. The vegetation will start to change and become an alpine desert with some of its beautiful flowers like Senecio Kilimanjaro, Lobelia.

Day 5: Climbing from Barranco Camp 3,940 meters to Barafu Camp 4,640 meters.

  • Distance: 10 kilometers
  • Hiking Time: 7 hours 

The trek will begin with the climb of the “Barranco Wall”. Safety is paramount and your guide will be walking close to assist you wherever you require help. Following the ridge, as it traverses up and down, you can appreciate magnificent views of the south glacier of Kibo. In the Karanga Valley, you will have a hot lunch, followed by 3 hours climb to Barafu Camp 4,640 meters. Once at the camp, you can, have an early dinner, and call it an early night.

Day 6: Climbing from Barafu Camp 4,640 meters to Uhuru Peak 5,895 meters to Mweka Camp 3,080 meters.

  • Distance:5.5 kilometers to Uhuru 
  • Hiking Time: 6-7 hours 
  • time:4-5 hours from Barafu to Mweka

After having hot tea and light snacks, the trek will start at midnight. By using a headlight, you will climb the screes of Kibo. After 5 to 6 hours of climbing in the dark, you will get to Stella Point, the crater rim of Mount Kilimanjaro. You will have Another 1-hour trekking along the crater ridge will take you to Uhuru Peak (the summit) at 5,895 meters. Here you will see Kilimanjaro in all its glory, enjoying the 360° view over the landscape below as the sun rises. You are now standing on the “Top of Africa”. After taking pictures and all your explorations the simple descent starts almost along the same route and shortly before midday you will arrive back at Barafu Camp, after having a hot meal and a well-deserved break of approximately 1 hour, you will be on the way going down to Mweka Camp 3,080 meter.

Day 7: Descending from Mweka Camp 3,080 meters to Mweka Gate 1,630 meters to Moshi or Arusha.

The final ascend of your amazing Kilimanjaro climbing adventure will start after breakfast with a traditional ceremony from the mountain teams. It will take about 3 hours’ descent via the rainforest continues to Mweka Gate, where your transferring driver will be waiting for you. The driver will take you to your arranged hotel in Moshi or Arusha

Day 8: Departure from Moshi to Kilimanjaro Airport.

Upon finishing breakfast, The office driver will take you to Kilimanjaro airport, or you can extend your trip to Tanzania by adding Safari and Zanzibar holiday.
