All about this Tour

The Umbwe Route is the steepest and shortest also directly route to Uhuru Peak, this route mostly used by special people who have been to the mountain before because of its steepness. The route used for ascending and descend fast, the people who hold the record use this route. While umbwe route is a non-technical climb, it does offer steep ascent and requires trekkers to scramble over rocks and tree roots at certain point. It is known to be the hardest and most direct route up the Kilimanjaro and even features several exposed ridges that are not for the faint of heart. The fitness and stamina of hikers may be tested along the way and it is best for experienced mountain trekkers who looking for a challenge.

Arrival and Relaxation

Upon arrival, you will be met timeously at Kilimanjaro Airport by our transfer specialist who will welcome you and then transfer you to your arranged hotel in Arusha. That evening your mountain guide will meet you for a briefing on the hike and check your trekking gears and ensure that you have all the necessary equipment that you required for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 2

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

After breakfast the day begins with a 2 hours’ drive to Umbwe Gate where registration formalities. The trail ascends sharply on a forestry track which winds up the dense rain forest and lush vegetation with very old trees and lilts of ferns and mosses mark this as an area that get reliable rain year-round. The forest abounds with wildlife, small bushbuck and duikers as well as monkeys. The path narrows and steepens as we climb the ridge between two rivers surrounded by huge trees. Umbwe Camp is perched between trees and thick undergrowth. We will have lunch in the trail before reaching the Umbwe cave camp.

Day 3

Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

Shortly after starting the hike the forest gradually gives away to the giant heath. The trail has been following a ridge or some time and as it ascends through the heath land the ridge narrows and sharpens, finally becoming knife edge with steep drops on each side. As the height of the heath reduces there are stunning views of both Kilimanjaro’s southern flank and across the Mount Meru some 50 miles away. Wildlife changes with the vegetation, jackals may be heard barking and the huge Lammergeyer seen circling overhead. The camp is overlooking the Barranco Valley with views up towards Arrow Glacier.

Day 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Today starts with a short, but fun, scramble to the top of the Great Baranco wall. Then we climb the non-technical but steep, nearby 280m cliff. From the top of the Barranco wall we cross a series of hills and valley until we descend sharply into Karanga valley for the lunch at the Karanga Camp. The views from the wall are nothing less than magnificent. The rest of the day is spent skirting the base of kibo peak over our left shoulder.

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast we leave Karanga and we continue up to the rocky section to rocky section to Barafu camp From Karanga the tour heads up a moraine ridge, taking your time and going slowly. The views here can be spectacular on the southern glaciers and of the glacial valleys. Here we make camp, rest and enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are viewable from this position, the final stage to Barafu is quite steep, and as always, it’s taken it very slowly. As with the day before you reach camp by around lunch time leaving lots of time to prepare and relax.

Day 6

Barafu Camp to Uhuru then Descent to Mweka Camp

You will be awakened at midnight and after a light breakfast, start climbing at around 1 a.m. It is at this stage that the climb becomes much more difficult. Here, very few will not be suffering from altitude sickness in some form or another; and climbers should carry as little as possible on this portion of the climb. Temperatures will range from -4° to 5° Fahrenheit. Making your way up a path that is flanked by the Ratzel and Rebman glaciers, you will climb for about six hours before reaching the edge of the crater at Stella Point. Another hour of climbing brings you to the summit. Uhuru Peak stands at 5895 m and is the highest point on the continent of Africa. The track around the edge of the crater is rocky and icy. Concentrate on your feet, and follow your guide very closely for this portion of the journey. The descent is now easier than the ascent. You will reach Barafu Camp after about three hours (around 11:30 AM). Climbers will be given the opportunity to rest and have some refreshments before continuing on to Mweka Camp for the night. Arriving into camp at around 5:00PM, you will have trekked a total of thirteen hours today.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast then continue to go down to Mweka gate where you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates. Meet by a driver guide will transfer to last point for hot lunch and then drive back to your hotel in Arusha. It is a welcome treat to sleep in a bed, take a hot shower and celebrate.
