Saanane Island National Park

Saanane Island National Park is located on the island of Saanane. In Mwanza, Tanzania, there is a national park. Mzee Saanane Chawandi, the island’s owner at the time, was honored with the park’s name. In 1964, this park was founded as a zoo in Tanzania. It was established with two main goals in mind: first, to encourage interest in wildlife conservation and education among the general public, and second, to provide recreation to the inhabitants of Mwanza town. In 1991, the island was designated as a Game Reserve.

Location of Saanane Island National Park

The Saanane Island National Park, located approximately 2 kilometers southwest of the city center in the Gulf of Lake Victoria, is home to a variety of fauna and birds.

The park holds the distinction of being the first National Park in the world to be located within a city, as well as the smallest National Park in Tanzania and East Africa. Getting to Saanane Island National Park

The Saanane National Park is accessible by road or air from Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airports in Mwanza. Mwanza City is also accessible by train from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kigoma, and Tabora. People also travel to Mwanza Port by ship/vessel from Uganda, Kenya, Bukoba, and adjacent islands.

A frequent short boat journey of around 5 minutes from Park Offices on the mainland will take you to the island. The Park Offices are conveniently located within a 15-minute walk from the City Center.

Saanane Island National Park Wildlife

Crocodiles, Monitor Lizards, Agama Lizards, Pancake and Leopard Tortoises, and Snakes, particularly Pythons, are all common here. The Park’s aquatic area is home to a variety of fish species, primarily Tilapia and Nile Perch. Buffalo, Bushbuck, DikDik, Elephant, Eland, Impala, Black Rhino, Topi, Warthog, wildebeest, Zebra, and Monkeys including Pats and Vervet, Giraffe, Porcupine, and Crocodiles were among the wild animals carried to the island between 1964 and 1966.

Cost of Saanane Island National Park Fees

The cost of admission to Saanane Island National Park is low. However, you can only pay with a credit card. A tourist pays $35 for the boat ride back and $30 for park fees.
