Barafu Camp

Barafu Camp is the high-altitude base camp for the final summit attempt on the Machame Route, situated at approximately 4,640 metres (15,223 ft) above sea level. The name Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, reflecting the cold, harsh conditions of this high-altitude environment. Located on a rocky ridge, Barafu offers dramatic views across Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert landscape. Trekkers normally rest here before beginning the challenging night-time summit ascent toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak, Tanzania’s highest point.
