Mount Meru

From thrilling wildlife encounters on the vast Serengeti plains to the barefoot luxury of Zanzibar’s pristine shores, our expert team in Tanzania ensures an unforgettable journey.

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, rising to 4,566 meters above sea level within Arusha National Park. Often overshadowed by nearby Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru is considered one of Africa’s most rewarding trekking destinations thanks to its dramatic volcanic landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and spectacular summit views. The mountain features lush rainforests, open heathlands, alpine deserts, and a striking horseshoe-shaped crater formed by an ancient volcanic eruption, offering hikers an unforgettable journey through a variety of natural environments.

The mountain is renowned for its rich wildlife and scenic trekking routes. Unlike many mountain climbs, the lower slopes of Mount Meru are inhabited by giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, elephants, and black-and-white colobus monkeys, making the ascent a unique combination of safari and hiking experience. Treks are conducted with armed park rangers, allowing visitors to safely enjoy close encounters with wildlife before ascending through dense forests and rugged volcanic terrain toward the summit. On clear mornings, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Great Rift Valley, and the surrounding plains.

Mount Meru is widely regarded as the perfect acclimatization climb before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro, while also being an outstanding adventure in its own right. Most climbs take three to four days, with the sunrise from Socialist Peak considered one of East Africa’s most spectacular mountain experiences. Whether seeking a challenging trek, exceptional wildlife encounters, or panoramic views from Tanzania’s second-highest peak, Mount Meru offers an unforgettable adventure for outdoor enthusiasts.
