Tanzania Walking Safaris

Walking safaris offer an immersive and authentic way to experience Tanzania's wildlife. You actively participate in the wilderness, making it a thrilling adventure. Options range from short day treks to mobile camping, where your camp is moved for you, emphasizing immersion and the outdoors over luxury. Trekking involves backpacking and camping in different locations each night.

Why Choosing Walking Safaris?

Wildlife Up-Close

In a vehicle, animals often overlook your presence, but on foot, you become part of their world, offering a unique perspective. Walking enables close encounters and a chance to observe smaller wildlife that's easily missed from a vehicle.

Remote Access

Walking into isolated areas, far from vehicle access, brings unparalleled freedom, solitude, and immersion in nature. It's a unique connection, allowing close wildlife encounters and exploration off the beaten path that game drives can't replicate.

Rules for Walking Safaris in Tanzania National Parks

Walks in the National Parks must adhere to TANAPA’s (Tanzanian National Park Authorities) rigorous guidelines, which are in place to ensure that walking is as safe as possible. At any given time, no more than six visitors may go on a walk, and they must be escorted by at least one TANAPA-certified armed ranger who must adhere to particular walking routes. However, because these laws are new to Tanzania’s national parks, we would only recommend walking safaris from lodges that we know have a track record of providing consistently good walking safaris with well-established guides.

Tanzania Walking Safari Guide

You will journey into remote Serengeti areas with an expert walking guide, a ranger, a chef, and porters who will carry the majority of the equipment. All you need is a light backpack (limit 15-20 lb) and the ability to put up your own lightweight tent. Sleeping in a tent under the stars, with only the canvas between you and the bush, is an unforgettable experience.
